ARTICULATION

Children who struggle to produce certain speech sounds, for example a [s] or [r] sound. It might be difficult for others to understand what your child is saying and your child might get frustrated when he/she is not understood by others.

PHONOLOGICAL patterns

Phonological patterns refer to the patterns that children use to simplify adult speech. Friends and family might find it challenging to understand your child’s speech. Your child may talk about the “tat” instead of the “cat”. Phonological processes are still considered age appropriate until the age of 3 ½ years, but should be eliminated hereafter.

LANGUAGE

A child may have difficulty following instructions and using age appropriate vocabulary. They may use short sentences and their sentence construction (the way in which words are joined to form a sentence) may not be considered age appropriate. They may further struggle to recall the events of a short story.

EARLY COMMUNICATION INTERVENTION

Early Communication Intervention is a service provided from birth to the age of three years. Various techniques are used to elicit new words and to improve communication skills. As part of this service the therapist will aim to equip the parent to make use of these techniques to elicit new words and to improve sentence length during day-to-day activities at home.

STUTTERING

Your child may repeat sounds, words or phrases. This may cause breaks in speech and can also negatively affect your child’s self-esteem.

AUDITORY PROCESSING

Refers to the ability to process, interpret and attach meaning to what is being said. These skills are especially important for reading and spelling success. Your child may have difficulty hearing and understanding language, despite having normal hearing abilities. The child will typically struggle to follow instructions in class, they may find it difficult to discriminate between words and they may struggle with auditory analysis and auditory synthesis.

PRAGMATIC SKILLS

Pragmatic skills refer to the social use of language. A child may have difficulty with social communication – making eye contact, taking turns and they may struggle with topic maintenance.

AURAL REHABILITATION

After the child has been properly fitted with hearing aids/cochlear implants, a Speech-Language Therapist can provide therapy in order to improve listening-, articulation- and language skills.
